Must-Have Features for an Organized Closet New Build or Renovation

When you’re moving into a new home or renovating the home you’re already in, you undoubtedly want to maximize storage and function as well as make it beautiful. If you're like most homeowners, well-planned closet space is probably near the top of your list.
We've designed and organized systems for countless closets both old and new, so here's our list and photos of must-have features for an organized closet new build or renovation (along with a few things we would avoid).

Make all the shelves adjustable and flat
Adjustable shelves multiply your storage options and give you so much flexibility on how to customize your storage and have room to grow. They accommodate different shoe heights and are more practical and versatile for storing other items, such as handbags, jewelry, baskets and bins. Adding plenty of holes to the inner sides makes adjustments even easier.
We prefer flat shelves, not slanted. Shoes tend to slide off slanted shelves. Also, slanted shelves may not allow for you to alternate heel-and-toe shoe storage, which can be valuable when maximizing space.
Ask your to contractor make more shelves than you think you'll need and get extra shelf pins to keep on hand. You can always pull them out later and store the extra shelves if you don't use them.
Add a mix of deep and shallow drawers
We like versatility and options when organizing, and drawer depth is a key consideration to allow for that. Our favorite mix is 3-4" for a hidden jewelry drawer, 6-8" for lingerie and socks, and 10-14" for bulkier items like jeans or sweatshirts.

A shelf on top of closet rods
I’m always surprised how many homes don’t come with shelves on top of closet rods. It’s an easy addition and allows you to use the space for additional storage.

Add electrical outlets and good lighting during the build
Lighting for shoe and accessory bays is a nice touch that increases visibility and offers a luxe look. The way it highlights your pieces makes your closet feel like a boutique instead of just a place to store your stuff. Overhead lighting is important too. A mix of can and accent lighting is lovely and helps you see details much better. Clothing stains, mismatched colors, tears, lint or pilling on clothes is easier to see before you get dressed. No more wardrobe surprises when you're headed out the door!
If you’re at the pre-drywall stage, making additions to your electrical access is usually straightforward. Now is a good time to think about adding a charging bay for electronics like your Apple watch, phone and laptop too.

Be cautious when adding closet windows
Natural light is lovely, but in closets it can present problems. Sunlight fades fabric and limits options for dressing. Closets tend to have poor climate control so windows can really heat up the space in warm weather. Windows also limit storage, taking up valuable wall space. If you do have them, consider window tint or window treatments.
Consider built-in dressers and display features during the closet new build or renovation
It makes sense to have all your clothes in one space so you aren’t going back and forth between rooms to get dressed. Consider a closet wall dresser system or island with lots of drawers. The top makes an ideal spot for a jewelry display or even a clothes folding station. Make sure that it’s not too tall to access.

Intentional space for laundry hamper storage
You'll be looking at it daily, so plan for your laundry hamper to integrate into your space. This niche allows room for a tall hamper from The Container Store to sit comfortably and there is enough room for the lid to come off without pulling the hamper out. Consider including one for each category you sort your laundry into so you can just grab a hamper and start washing without having to pre-sort. Some categories we see often are lights, darks, towels, dry cleaning, and his-and-hers.

A laundry room off the primary suite is a good idea as well. It's so convenient to place worn clothes directly into the wash, and to put them away when clean.

Space for a full-length mirror
You’ve put it all together…now make sure you can check your look from all angles.
