My Interview with Voyage Houston Magazine

best home organizer houston

When Voyage Houston asked to interview me for their magazine, I was honored and grateful to share the story of how Basket & Bin came to be. I love how Voyage Houston spotlights small businesses in cities across the U.S., not only to help those businesses grow but to inspire others to follow their dreams too.

Here's what I had to say about my leap of faith: Debbie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin? I started Basket & Bin in 2017, soon after Hurricane Harvey flooded my home along with many, many others. I had become disenchanted with the corporate world and my career over 20 years in recruiting and business development, and I knew I wanted a change. Prayer and the support of my family and friends led me to take a leap of faith into starting my own business in home organizing. However, as I began to ramp up, I kept hitting roadblocks that delayed officially starting. I had a strong feeling that I was meant to wait, and waiting is definitely not my strength! But when Harvey flooded my orderly, organized home, I had a front-row seat to what it was like living in chaos. Suddenly I knew why I was meant to wait to start, and Basket & Bin officially launched soon afterwards.

It’s been four years, and I’ve never looked back. Owning a home organizing business combines my love of structure with beautiful aesthetics. It allows me to use my corporate background to handle all the details of running a business but to do so in a way that is driven by my morals and standards instead of someone else’s. I truly love transforming people’s homes into a place they can relax, connect and recharge.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way? Starting a business while my home was flooded certainly had challenges. Sometimes I’d come home into a disaster zone after organizing someone else who had flooded, and I’d become overwhelmed. Many nights, my kids did homework in our car or a park because of the dust and noise from reconstruction at home. Meanwhile, I’d be next to them, teaching myself how to create my website or following up on sales leads. I never really questioned my decision to make my business work, though. I truly believe this is what I am meant to do. When I see a client’s face light up when they’re able to enjoy their own organized, beautiful, clutter-free home, I know I’m where I’m meant to be.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Basket & Bin? Basket & Bin creates beautiful, organized spaces customized to your lifestyle. My approach to organizing is about simplifying and beautifying your environment so you can enjoy your home and the people in it. No one likes searching for lost items or spending time and money on things they don’t need or can’t find. By creating organizing solutions based on your space and lifestyle, I conquer the distractions that keep you from reaching your goals.

Because I spend time upfront learning about your lifestyle and what works in your space and what doesn’t, we’ll create a system you can maintain for the long term. By adding design and decorating elements, Basket & Bin combines form and function to create a home you’ll be proud to live in.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us? As a child, I loved reading. My dear grandparents encouraged this and bought me books regularly. Before long, I decided I needed a good way to organize them. I created my own card catalog system, complete with check-out cards in the back of each book for friends who might want to borrow them. I believe I was about eight years old, so I guess becoming a professional home organizer is a natural fit!
